Karadaiyan Nombu 2021 Date
Karadaiyan Nombu will be celebrated on 14th March, Sunday of 2021. Karadaiyan Nombu is celebrated when the transition between two Tamil Months takes place. It is celebrated exactly when Maasi month ends and Panguni month starts.
Karadaiyan Nombu Story & Significance
Karadaiyan Nombu festival celebration is associated with Savitri, the daughter of King Astapathi, and her husband Satyavan. Karadaiyan Nombu is also known as ‘Savitri Nonbu Vratham’.
Satyavan was the son of a blind royal couple living in exile. The family was ousted from the kingdom by enemies.
While finalizing the marriage of Savitri with Satyavan, the king was cautioned by Sage Narada, that Satyavan will not live more than one year citing the planetary position in his horoscope.
Being aware of the death of her husband, and to protect his life Savitri was observing ardent prayers and vrats/vraths (Fasts). On the day when Maasi month was ending, and Panguni was starting, Yamaraj (Yama) arrived on bullock to claim the life of Satyavan.
Savitri followed Yama, carrying her husband’s soul. Getting pleased by her persistent efforts and vrats, prayers she performed for her husband Yama, granted her three boons.
She was able to extend her husband’s life by performing vrats and prayers.
Savitri is hailed as Pativrata, a staunch devout wife.
The vrath is named after Savitri, married and unmarried can observe Karadaiyan Nombu vrath. Married women observe this vrath for the longevity and well-being of their husbands while unmarried girls observe Karadaiyan Nombu to get an ideal life partner.
